Concours d'Elegance of America to move in 2011
July 27, 2010 - as posted by Old Cars Weekly
.
A day after the 2010 Concours d'Elegance of America ended, organizers announced that the event will be moved next year to a different location to take advantage of more onsite facilities.

For more than 30 years Detroit’s “love affair” with the automobile has been celebrated at Meadow Brook Hall on the campus of Oakland University, but chosen to replace the venerable venue is The Inn at St John’s in Plymouth. Next year's Concours will be held July 31, 2011.

The Concours’ Board of Directors stated in a press release issued Monday that its decision to move the world-class event to St. John’s was not taken lightly. “Our many years at Meadow Brook Hall have been wonderful,” remarked Concours Chairman Peter Heydon. “We have shared Detroit’s passion for the automobile with friends from all over the world on the beautiful lawns of Meadow Brook Hall. But as times have changed, the economics of producing an event such as ours necessitates the presence of an on-site hotel with conference facilities specifically designed for large events. We will dearly miss the Hall; but many of our Exhibitors and Sponsors have looked for us to make such a change as this for some time.

“While the venue will change, the character of the Concours will not," he added. "Sunday Concours Day, RM’s Saturday Auction, The Motoring Tour, Seminars and weekend Gala will remain as continuing features of the 2011 event at The Inn at St. John’s.”

St John’s offers the Concours 197 acres for showcasing the 'by invitation only' world-class automobiles traditionally shown at the Concours. The luxury hotel provides meeting rooms, banquet halls, fine dining facilities and additional rooms at an adjacent sister hotel. Additionally, the meeting rooms and conference areas feature natural exterior window light for seminars, demonstrations and ancillary Concours events; two large ballrooms; a capacious display field; a 27-hole golf course adjacent to the former Seminary; and a location in close proximity to Detroit International Airport and the area’s major Interstate highways.

“The management, staff and the Board of Directors are thrilled that the Concours d'Elegance of America is moving to St John’s,” said Dana Orlando, St John’s event coordinator. “We do not look at the Concours as a customer we look them as our partner in this event and our service will demonstrate that view.”

I wanted to share a fabulous letter received on the 301 pole car. Be sure to check out this gal's website, it is awesome!

Hello --

I'm sure you have heard numerous personal stories from local people about why this landmark is important to them. However, you probably haven't heard much from people that live several hundred miles away and have never lived in Mechanicsville. I live in New York City and have only seen this particular Car-on-a-Stick in photos. But I treasure its existence as if it were in my hometown. Perhaps you never though a little rusty car could have such universal appeal. Its cuteness and look-at-me attitude sure speak to me.

I think I speak for thousands of people across the country that plan our vacations around seeing things just like this Pole Car. Roadside tourism of the 1950s is alive and well. All across America, locally-owned stores, motels, restaurants, etc. are being replaced with chain locations. What that leaves us with is cities without any personality -- tidy but bland environments. There's no reason to travel anywhere when every town looks just like yours. While many cities publish guidebooks and online information about their historic sites, rarely do they include places/things that are from the 1950s-1970s. For many people like myself, that is what we are most interested in.

In my opinion, I think that the Pole Car could be turned into a source of pride for Mechanicsville. If it is saved and restored, perhaps there could be an annual day or weekend festival to tie into its "renaissance". It's such a great example on many levels of individuality, ugly duckling transformation, little guy overcoming odds, etc. It's great fun to make a fuss of such things. Ask the folks in Collinsville, IL who have a festival every year to celebrate their giant catsup bottle water tower. Folks come from all over the country for that. I think there is a great opportunity here to build a sense of community while attracting tourists as well.

Thanks for listening to my heartfelt concern for this little Crosley car. Long may it stand to bring smiles to locals and visitors alike.

Sincerely,

Debra Jane Seltzer

Congratuations -- it sounds like you're making headway in keeping the Pole Car. Fun landmarks like this are worth fighting for. I don't think city officials have any idea how many people to out of their way to see things like this. If you poke around you'll find things like the Catsup Bottle Water Tower (Collinsville, IL), the Giant Coffee Pot (Bedford, PA), and the Giant Duck (Hampton Bays, NY). These landmarks and many others were endangered and scoffed at at one time. Now they are local treasures that have brought communities together with annual festivals and so on. I hope the best for this little car. If your efforts succeed, it would even make a good children's book!

Breaking News 301 Pole Car must come down for owners to obtain their Certificate of Occupancy. However, there is good news the board will support a proffer amendment which will allow the car to be restored ans reinstalled at a new height of 16'. We will still need a structural engineer to either approve the existing structure or design a new footing with proper mounting. This is going to cost a big fee to the county of $2,500 for the paper work.
Still Runnin Magazine is pleading for your continued support and is accepting donations for the 301 pole car! Or services such as engineering, concrete for new footing, design, restoration of the pole car, ect. Please Continue to spread the word and email lea@stillrunnin.com

a letter to Mr. McGhee

I am writing you regarding the Crosley on the pole on Rt 301. I am a lifelong Hanover county resident, 39+ years, growing up in Montpelier and currently living in Ashland. There isn't a time that I've gone down Rt 301 that I don't recall the little Crosley on the pole...even before I knew it was a Crosley. It's a Hanover landmark that is almost synonymous with the Mechanicsville area. Much like the plane that was once lodged in the roof of the auto shop in Short Pump, it's a novelty that area residents are proud of, and that also stands out from the cookie-cutter standard of malls and businesses these days. We teach our youth that each person is unique, that being different is a celebrated part of life, but we are looking to stretch Rt 301 into a never-ending pallet of bland boxes with their equally bland sign posts, unable to distinguish one from the next until well past it. Perhaps it is time to embrace something left from our past and celebrate it for the uniqueness it possesses rather than trying to make it conform to just another bland box.

Sincerely,

Dianne J
