  • WORLD OF WHEELS! I've been going to Atlanta's biggest car show for 35 years. The show was in the Atlanta Civic Center in the '70s, but out-grew that facility and moved intown to the Georgia World Congress Center where it could sprawl out. Show attendance got thin in the mid '90s and fewer 'traveling' exhibit cars made it this far east/south. Another of the show's problems was the growth of outdoor weekend events, in particular the enormous group called the "GoodGuys" and their thousands of cars shows. Now, at least in the past 5 or so years, I've begun to see more of the million-dollar hot rods and Kustoms swing this way. Perhaps the best fun aspect of the Atlanta show is the live acts; skate/bicycle ramps, go-go girls stage acts and my fave, "Rock-a-billy", particularly the Psycho Devilles! Rat rods had a big presence 4 years ago, but last year's show only had a couple of rows of them. I imagine their attendance wanes because of entry-fees. Saturday night is usually the big party and crowded. If you want to be able to photograph the cars minus the crowd, Sunday afternoon is ideal. I hope to meet Fonzie this year ...
