Thursday morning 8:30 am August 30th, I have already been to the dentist’s office, and the rest of the Labor Day weekend will be spent driving from VA to Northern NJ for one of my most favorite shows, Lead East. The four day show is billed as the World’s biggest 50’s Party and I have to agree. With a sock hop, prom, round the clock DJ’s, drive-in movies, oldies and Doo Wop bands and at least 1400 pre ‘68 cars, this is a great way for a gearhead to spend the last weekend of summer. Normally we take our ‘Vette, but this year my 15 year old son, Bill, was able to go so we needed a larger vehicle. I decided to take our ‘64 GTO convertible. I have owned the car since 1974 and it is a 3x2bbl 4 speed matching number car that has been in storage for 6 years and really hadn’ been anywhere of any distance for 10 years. But being the eternal optimist, I figured a new set of tires, tune up, get the top motor working again and we’re off.
Not quite … although the Goat was running great the day before, after packing the trunk, loading my wife and son in the car, I turned the key and … nothing. I had lights, horn, etc. but it would not turn over. Under the hood was showing me nothing wrong so we push started it and stopped by a friend’ shop where we disccovered a broken wire.
Now we’re off. Nope.
Stopped to get a cold drink and the Goat would not start again. Played around under the hood and found a loose connection on the firewall. This connection would be a problem all weekend but could not be replaced now … so we headed out.
