Hollywood Cemetery: A Spellbinding Cruise

Some may find this to be a strange place to consider for a road trip. While others, like myself, will find The Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia to be a fascinating place to roam. The monuments, ironwork and statuary throughout the Hollywood Cemetery provide countless examples of nineteenth century funerary art and symbols. The rolling hills and winding paths are, without question, a spellbinding place to tour.

Many visitors seek out the more famous or infamous that rest here. Hollywood Cemetery offers visitors a rich history with United States Presidents, Governors, Confederate States Presidents, 25 Confederate Generals, (the most of any cemetery in the county), Confederate Soldiers & Daughter’s of the Confederacy.  But ... do not overlook the craftsmanship of other monuments and stone carvings of the beloved men, women and children of all nationalities that rest in-between the famous. Hollywood Cemetery was named after the Holly trees that were abundant on the grounds. Sitting on high land it looks over the James River and the city skyline. Designed for horse drawn carriages back in the day it makes for a narrow pass for modern day automobiles, but no worries, you can motor thru and take in the sights easily enough.
