Pumpkin Run
November 8th was the date set for the 8th Annual Pumpkin Run in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. If you haven’t heard of this show, you need to. The show is held in Flemming’s junk yard and what a yard it is. Junked cars from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, trucks, 3-wheeled Cushmans, homemade motorcycles, a diner, old signs, even dinosaurs are strewn about the woods. There was even a swap meet. Participating cars, trucks, bulldozers, tractors, whatever you can bring are welcome. We couldn’t resist.
We decided to take our ‘66 BelAir wagon, as it has always been dependable and there is always room for interesting parts and pieces that we hoped to find at the swap meet. Before we pulled out of town (we figured on leaving Richmond around 2am, for the 6 hour ride) I needed to run into town to pick up some needed things. I was about 6 miles from home, when I smelled gas. Before I could pull over, the ‘66 sputtered and died and I noticed someone on the shoulder waving his arms at me. Not a good sign! Coasting to a stop, heavy smoke and flames became visible from around the hood ... shit! I opened the hood and quickly shut it, trying to keep the fire at bay ‘til the two good samaritans running towards me with fire extinguishers got there.
We were able to get the fire out with damage being contained to the engine bay and the hood. I did not get the names of these two guys who ran out to help, I wish I had. Car towed in, call placed to State Farm.
