DEUCE of SPADES
by Lea Ellen Dunham
A 1932 deuce is parked at Bob’s Big Boy every Friday night. It is seen cruisin’ the streets of LA in So Cal., rain or shine. Who is the girl behind the wheel of this old black jalopy? Some know her simply as the girl with the deuce, while others have called her a “Hot Rod Extraordinaire.” I know her as a vibrant young lady with boundless energy that becomes contagious within the first few minutes of speaking with her; the multi-talented woman by the name of Faith Granger.
Faith purchased the ‘32 deuce in the summer of ‘06, and is the deuce’s tenth owner. The deuce, and Faith, both with vintage charm, just seem to fit each other perfectly. Faith said she is “very much in love with her deuce”, that it is by far the best relationship she’s ever had ... And what a relationship they are having together!
For the past two years with a little help from her friends, Faith has worked hard to make the deuce near period correct (Circa 1955). Once a tomboy who would sneak peeks at a mechanics handbook under her desk at school, Faith finds joy today wrenching on her beloved deuce. It has taken the car over 30 years to be brought to the nostalgic Ford roadster it is today. But the deuce is not just an ordinary deuce; it is the star of “Deuce of Spades”, the new hot rod film everybody is talking about! A film that promises to set the hot rod community on fire.
Faith’s passion for hot rods, and love for the deuce is the essence of this undertaking. In the winter of 2007 Faith set out to make a full feature film totally independently. She began by writing the script about a hot rod legend, Johnny Callaway, a fictional character that rocked the San Fernando Valley, and Saugus drag strip between 1952 - 1955. For the gals out there ... There’s Johnny Callaway, played by the very attractive Tim McReynolds ... Enuff’ said. For the guys, there are jalopies galore!
