How to Rebuild the Y-Block Ford V-8.

Posted on November 7, 2012 | Leave a comment »

Charlie Morris has a New Book Coming this Fall. The book will contain a detailed history of the engine series and it's racing accomplishments from the 1950's till today. It will provide step by step instructions on how to both rebuild a stock Y-Block engine and build a performance version using all the latest available speed equipment.

Figuring with the nostalgia, traditional hot rod trend and people getting so tired of small black Chevy engines in hot rods to the point that they are disguising them by putting fake valve covers from other engines on it might not be a bad time to do this book. There has not been a comprehensive Y-Block book written in over 20 years and the mainstream automotive press has always trashed this engine series every chance they get. Facts and statistics will show that not only is the Y-Block a strong engine it also ran Chevrolet off the race tracks in 1956-57 only to fall victim to the AMA ban on factory participation in performance in June 57. B.T.W. Ford abided by the letter of this agreement while GM and Chrysler kept right on developing high performance parts under the guise of "police packages".

The performance engine is a 322 cubic inch Y-Block with aluminum cylinder heads, timing cover, intake etc. It will mount an original VR-57 supercharger and an Ishy E-3 camshaft just like the fastest Fords in 57 used. We have upgraded in the area of pistons and some hardware but this engine is mostly OE Ford pieces. the second engine is a stock 292 that will receive a rebuild with some internal modern upgrades to make it more user friendly in 2012.
