The Passing of Tommy Sparks

Posted on February 21, 2011 | Leave a comment »

Tommy Sparks GarageStill Runnin Magazine learned some very sad news today when Leon Kaplan of KABC Radio show announced the passing of Tommy Sparks.

This is indeed a great loss to the car hobby world. Tommy Sparks was a well known Hot Rodder and race car builder. He built cars in the 40's and 50's.

He was a judge at major Car Shows. There will be no funeral for Tommy Sparks, but a memorial is planned. Our condolences to his wife and family.

  • I'm hoping that Tommy's '29 Ford Roadster will be able to be on display at the 2011 Palos Verdes Concours in my new Class called HOT ROD LEGENDS. I gave my card to his daughter Jenny and she was very excited that I asked. Will be a great tribute to Tommy's memory. The latest info on the Concours can be seen at www.pvconcours.org

  • I was very lucky to be among the 300+ persons invited to Tommy's Memorial Service at the Petersen Museum today. They had a running slide Show of his life and cherished moments. Tommy's life touched so many people and hobbies. Everything from Hot Rods, restored classics, Midget Racers and even racing bicycles. Tommy was a California State Champion bike rider many years ago! He worked on the movie TUCKER providing replica engines in fiberglas and body parts. At least 18 persons got up and talked about their experiences with
the soft spoken Tommy. Some of the top names in the hobby spoke on his behalf. Bruce Meyer, Alex Xydias, Fred Roth, Steve Young and Leon Kaplan. His lovely wife Laura and daughters Jenny and Barbara also spoke. I am so honored to have attended and be able to thank them for their support of Deuce Of Spades. Jerry

  • Today ay 3 pm at the Petersen Automotive Museum here in Los Angeles they will be holding a Memorial Service for Tommy Sparks. Weather permitting, I'll be driving my '29 Ford Hot Rod called "Challenger" to this gathering. I never met Tommy but I heard alot about him. He was a major figure in the Hot Rod world and a big help to us in the making of Deuce Of Spades. The filming of his garage and home was done just before I came onboard the film crew. While I never had the pleasure of shaking his hand, I want to show my respects to Tommy and his dear family. I'll report back later to let you know how it went. All my best to Tommy and his grieving family. -Jerry

  • Tommy... Thank you for the big contribution to the car hobby and the movie vehicle business; you are part of a generation of pioneers that will never be duplicated, but very missed! RIP Tommy!
