Memorial Day

We are proud to live in a place we call the "Home of the Brave and the Land of the Free". For that, we can be thankful to All of our Veterans that have fought in the wars of the past and present.

Two Vietnam Vets displayed a 1955 Ford at the Turkey Run in Daytona Beach, Florida at a previous car show. They had hand painted and airbrushed the car with great pride and dedicated it to all of the Vietnam Veterans. The car serves as a rolling memorial for all those who served and reminder of our POW's and MIA's . The roof of the Ford bears signatures of numerous veterans, while the back window serves as a looking glass at a game of war made up of those small plastic green figures of army men that we all played with for hours as children. But the game is a bit different through this window of a time and place that was anything but make believe for the 58,579 brothers and sisters who never returned home from the Vietnam war.

God Bless our men and women serving this great country, we pray every day for their safe return to US soil! Still Runnin Magazine and its staff thank all of those who have served, and know that we will never forget! We hold close to our heart and honor all of our veterans, from all wars this Memorial Day and everyday for the freedom they have defended and afforded us. We will Never Forget! For we know that Freedom is NOT free. God Bless all of you and the U.S.A.

SR Side Note:

The names of the owner and two men that painted this car has escaped from my notes. I trust through word of mouth and the power of the internet that someone will alert them to the fact that Still Runnin Magazine has recognized them in our publication.

The Checkered Flag Jalopy Showdown - May 16th, 2009 - York Springs, PA

You Do Not Want to Miss all the Fun and Excitement at the Jalopy Showdown in Latimore Valley, PA! Besides all the great cars, huge swap meet, vendors galore, camping with your friends, track time, there is the museum that is a must see!

The museum is built on a wooded hillside overlooking the historic Latimore Valley Fairgrounds and Racetrack near York Springs, Pa. Along with establishing one the premier racing museums in the country, the 40 acre fairgrounds and racetrack were also passionately restored to their original beauty. This creates an almost magical atmosphere that makes EMMR a "living museum". http://www.emmr.org/about.htm

Back in 1975, a small group of racing enthusiasts known as the Williams Grove Old Timers, gathered near Harrisburg, Pa. They shared a common interest in the early days of American motor racing and a desire to preserve the history of that bygone era. Be sure to visit the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. Today the spectators and participants share the same common interest at the Jalopy Showdown, the museum is the whole reason for the show and is where the profit from the show go to.

Once you've toured the museum kick back and enjoy good music and good friends the Ultra Kings will be playing Friday evening around 6pm till 9pm. There will also be food on the infield. There is no charge to just stop by Friday if you want to hang out, eat, find the early deals in the swap. The museum kitchen staff start breakfast Saturday morning early for those that stay.

If you thought last year was a blast this year the House of Fab is donating a pair of their aluminum seats and a set of their new model A belt line panels for the raffle. Custom J is donating his handmade aluminum headrest for the raffle. He will also be over in the metal shapers area this year, so go over and try your hand at bending some tin. Hey don't forget to ride the rocket!

Here's a flashback at the fun from last year's Jalopy Showdown. Click on the slide show to see what you missed. Hold onto your hats, 'cos no doubt '09 is sure to be a good time at the Jalopy Showdown!

On The Road With Dallas

Where in the World is Dallas?

According to SR's tracking device Dallas was last sited hanging from the rim of the Grand Canyon at sunset catching the ever changing color of the rock. Then again, at sunrise still on the rim.

Oh ... what a photographer will do to get the right shot. And this photo special delivered to SR proves that statement to so be true!

Dallas reported to SR that he had been delayed in his travels. It seems a little trouble was had while photographing the majestic cactus and Dallas was busy picking some needles from his knee. Hmmm, sounds to me he must have thought the cactus a tree?

Where is he now ... one only knows? Stay Tuned to Still Runnin Magazine to find out Where in the World is Dallas.

Law About Inoperative Vehicles

Inoperable Vehicle Bill HB 2570

Car hobbyists went to the General Assembly THREE times to get an inoperative vehicle bill enacted. This law allows us to keep a couple of parts or project cars in our own yards as long as they can not be seen from the street.

HB 2570 would change this law from two to only one vehicle in Newport News, VA. If you don’t live in Newport News why should you care about this? Because today it’s Newport News, next session another city and sooner or later where YOU live YOUR rights will be taken away. It took three long years and a lot of effort to get this bill passed. We don’t want our rights eroded.

Because of falling house prices and the poor economy we are all living in over-assessed, over-taxed homes. Do we really want the government to take away our right to keep our own property on our own over-assessed, over-taxed property?

Is this another misguided attempt to get rid of “blight”? If the law requires vehicles stored by car hobbyists to be “out of view” then how can this be blight?

The bill is still in the Counties, Cities and Towns committee which means we CAN do something about this. You may contact your representative and senator and ask them to vote against this. The best thing to do is contact the members of the subcommittee that is considering this bill and ask them to protect your rights by voting against HB 2570 – be sure to include the bill number. Be polite as always and explain the need in our hobby for donor cars when new body parts etc are not available. It may not hurt to reiterate that this is a personal property rights issue as well, and the vehicles are to be stored out of public view.

Members of the subcommittee considering HB 2570:
Delegate Anne B. Crockett-Stark
(804) 698-1006
email: DELACrockett-Stark@House.virginia.gov

Delegate Robert G. Marshall
(804) 698-1013
email: DelBMarshall@house.virginia.gov

Delegate Sal R. Iaquinto
(804) 698-1084
email: DelSIaquinto@house.virginia.gov

Delegate Charles D. Poindexter
(804) 698-1009
email: DelCPoindexter@house.virginia.gov

Delegate James P. "Jimmie" Massie, III
(804) 698-1072
email: DelJMassie@house.virginia.gov

Delegate Franklin P. Hall
(804) 698-1069
email: Del_Hall@house.virginia.gov

Delegate C. Charles Caputo
(804) 698-1067
email: DelCCaputo@house.virginia.gov

Delegate Albert C. Pollard, Jr.
(804) 698-1099
email: DelAPollard@house.virginia.gov

Delegate Delores L. McQuinn
(804) 698-1070
email: DelDMcQuinn@house.virginia.gov

Many of you may know Delegate Riley Ingram – he is the chairperson of the committee considering this bill. He has attended and participated in the Car Club Council legislative forums. If you know him please contact him and ask him to do what he can to stop this bill from becoming law. His contact information is below:

Delegate Riley E. Ingram
(804) 698-1062
email: DelRIngram@house.virginia.gov

Thanks!
Fred

My letter to the delegates is below – feel free to use all or part of it.

Dear Delegate -----------,

Please vote against HB 2570. Car hobbyists worked with legislators for three years to get a very good law about inoperative vehicles. Car hobbyists need to store parts and project cars as part of our hobby. The law allows us to do that as long as they are out of ordinary view. Reasons to not support HB 2570:

• Car hobbyists worked with legislators to come up with a bill agreeable to all
• Car hobbyists need to store parts and project cars as part of the process of the restoration of vehicles – many parts are not being reproduced
• Car hobbyists are vital to our communities – we participate in parades and other community events – nearly all car shows raise money for local charities – car hobbyists donate tens of thousands of dollars to local charities every year
• As Americans we still should have property rights – the right to store our own property on our own property
• Since the law requires all stored vehicles to be out of sight then they cannot be blight

I urge you to vote against HB 2570.

Sincerely,
Fred Fann, Car Club Council of Central Virginia

Re-creation of the Club de Mer

The Real Star of the Show Is the Re-creation of the Club De Mer, built by Marty Martino, of Gum Springs, Virginia. The Club De Mer is heading off to Barrett-Jackson.

This amazing re-creation of the Pontiac Club De Mer 2 door Roadster has been built by Marty Martino with a fully functional 389 engine, 8 cylinder, 4-speed automatic transmission, power steering and leather. The blue exterior and red interior is simply stunning on this '59 Pontiac. The car will be at the Barrett-Jackson Auction Scottsdale 2009, Lot Number 1287 under current listing on Saturday.

During the 1950's, General Motors produced the Motoramas which were intended to showcase the current models. But the real stars of the shows were the "Futuristic Dream Cars", styled under the direction of Harley Earl. No car defined the Motorama experience more than the 1956 Pontiac Club de Mer. But sadly, it was no more than a non-running mockup and was ordered destroyed in late 1958. Up from its ashes is this one-off totally functional re-creation based on a 1959 Pontiac. It is powered by the '59's Strato Streak 389 engine along with its Jetaway Hydro-Matic. The OEM-style chassis is built using mid-sized Pontiac suspension clips with custom boxed rails. The body's inner structure is all steel, utilizing the 1959's inner doors, jambs, cowl sections, hinges and latches, augmented with square tubing. This has formed the basis for the one-off's authentically sculpted fiberglass outer body, replicating the design by Pontiac's Paul Gillian, giving the car that familiar General Motors solid feel. It features many unique details crafted just for this car including bumpers, lights, and interior components. Other features are the glass smooth Cerulean Blue paint, mimicking the original's metallic surface by Finish Masters expert Richard James, along with vermilion vat-dyed leather-covered custom-built bucket seats and the chrome finish on the one-off trim parts by Razor-Tec. This recently constructed creation is built by Marty Martino. It is the result of 3 intense years of work fueled by a passion for futuristic dream cars coupled with an art background and 40+ years of automotive sculpting and custom car building.

It would be an understatement to say this car will be exciting to watch roll across the stage at Barrett-Jackson. Still Runnin Magazine will be featuring a story on this amazing build.

Photos displayed on the Barrett Jackson website were taken by Dallas Gregory Photography. Who ever becomes the owner of this magnificent one of a kind has some serious bragging rights!

Wow, where did the time go? After making hotel arrangements for Corvettes of Carlisle for Big John and his boys, something that has become a yearly tradition, closing out the summer for father and son it only then dawned on me that I needed to start thinking about Labor Day weekend.

Labor Day for Big John and myself is spent at the world's biggest 50's party at "Lead East" in Parsippany, New Jersey. Although I enjoy most all car shows that we attend, Lead East is still tops on my personal list of favorites.

If any of you are going to Lead East, look for us. This year we'll be in the '58 Vette, unless we change our mind and decide to bring out the newest edition to the family and run the '54 Chevy up the road for its first debut.

All of us here at Still Runnin Magazine have been red lining upgrading our online magazine and finalizing the latest release packed with summer show events.

We've also put some great artists to work on custom tee's for Still Runnin. Let me put it this way, if you are familiar with Alan Johnson, then you are going to love the exclusive Still Runnin tee shirt he has done for us, soon to be available.

Remember, Still Runnin Magazine is about real people, real stories, real homegrowns. Not the rich and famous! Look for us cos' we're out there looking for you!
